Product Selection

"Continence products should not be supplied before an initial continence assessment, which should be carried out without delay. Products may be needed temporarily by patients awaiting or undergoing treatment and by those whose incontinence has proved intractable to treatment" (Good practice in continence services; DH,2000)

Containment products therefore, should not be considered as a treatment for incontinence. They should be used only as a coping strategy pending definitive treatment, an adjunct to ongoing therapy, or long-term management of incontinence after all other treatment options have been explored. (National Occupational Standards / Skills for Health, Continence Competencies, CC08, 2008)

Therefore, following assessment, if a product is required, the information below may be used as a guide to select an appropriate product.
