History
PAUL HARTMANN AG, the parent company of the Group, is among the long-established German industrial companies and is the oldest German dressings manufacturer. Its history can be traced back to a spinning mill founded in Heidenheim by Ludwig von Hartmann in 1818.
In 1873, under the management of his son Paul Hartmann, the production started of absorbent cotton wool according to a method for the removal of grease from cotton developed by the surgeon Professor Victor von Bruns from Tuebingen. A year later the Scottish Doctor, Sir Joseph Lister described in detail a process for the manufacture of germ-killing wound dressings in a letter to Paul Hartmann. The manufacture of dressings on an industrial scale started in Heidenheim with the manufacturing of "Lister'scher Carbolgaze" (Lister's carbolated gauze) as well as absorbent cotton wool according to Prof. von Bruns. The company became, also internationally, the flagship of an expanding dressings industry very quickly.
